X Kills Its Mac App and Accidentally Bans You for Switching to the IPad Version

The death of Twitter, the brand, not the website, apparently wasn’t as final as we all once thought. It would seem that the final nail in the coffin was the permanent redirection from Twitter.com to X.com , but one forgotten legacy Twitter product continued the fight – the old Twitter for Mac app, which was still available on the Mac. App store. Well, that is, until now . The developers of Mask X have finally disabled it. The old Twitter Mac app has been discontinued, and users are now prompted to “upgrade” to X Mac for iPad instead.

This is definitely not an upgrade. Sure, it includes all the modern X features, including AI features and other Premium options, but it also loses what made Twitter fun in the “good old days.” The Mac app was so old that it wasn’t covered by all the ads, promotions, and community notes that populate X today. This provided protection against scams and overtly weird/political ads.

But even if you prefer the modern X to legacy Twitter, the iPad X app also only works on Apple laptops with Apple Silicon chips, which means M1 chips or higher. This leaves a huge number of older Intel laptops behind. If you’re using an older Mac, you’ll have to use the website. And if you want to reduce the number of ads, you’ll have to pay for Twitter Premium.

But the problems don’t end there. At least for now, using the iPad X app on a Mac is not a good idea. Reddit users reported that updating to the new X app and logging in instantly locked their accounts. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon as X software engineer Zach Warunek said the team is looking into the issue.

If you’re a Twitter fan and don’t want to switch to X, it might be time to ditch X in favor of Mastadon or Threads . When you leave, be sure to delete your X account.
