Habo Is a Simple (and Free) Habit Tracking App

Over the years, we’ve talked a lot about the “don’t break the chain” method of habit formation , where you visually mark the completion of a habit every day to help you build it. The classic method is to put a cross on a paper calendar every day. The longer your hot streak lasts, the more motivated you are to continue it—as anyone who’s had experience interacting with friends on Snapchat knows.

Paper is great for this, of course, but some people prefer digital tools. That’s why I love Habo , an open-source habit tracking app for Android and iPhone that couldn’t be simpler. There are no ads or upsells here – it’s just a way to form habits. Once you download and open the app, add as many habits as you like. The idea is that you will test things as you do them.

At the top of each habit there is an indicator that lets you know how many days your streak lasted. And you can customize the settings to do things a paper calendar can’t, like remind you of your habit every day at a certain time. For example: you want to start doing 20 push-ups every day before lunch. You can set the app to send you a notification right at 11:55 am. You can also add specific information about your daily routine and the reward you will receive after completing it.

What I really like about this app is its simplicity and the fact that it is completely free. Too many productivity tools become unnecessarily complex as they strive to monetize. Habo does what you need and nothing more.
