YouTube Is Testing Its Own Community Notes Feature
Pretty soon you might start seeing notes on YouTube videos. The Google-owned video sharing platform is now testing an experimental system that will be similar to Community Notes X, which allows users to add context to various posts – usually as a means of limiting the spread of misinformation.
The YouTube equivalent of this feature will initially only be available on mobile devices in the US, and will only support English at first. “This may include notes that clarify when a song is intended to be a parody, indicate when a new version of the product being reviewed is available, or inform viewers when old footage is being incorrectly portrayed as a current event,” YouTube said in a blog post. .
Of course, such a system has many uses, especially on a platform like YouTube. The YouTube team says it expects bugs during the testing phase and that some notes will likely not be suitable for the video. With these glitches, YouTube is hoping to get a lot of feedback on the quality of the notes, as well as how to improve it over time so it can be expanded in the future.
For starters, the YouTube team says that only a limited number of eligible participants will be invited to the program, and that invitations will be sent via email and Creator Studio. Eligibility will depend on whether the user has an active YouTube channel in good standing.
During the experiment, you will be able to rate notes that appear publicly under the video. Ratings will include options such as “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “not helpful,” as well as a field for you to enter the reason why you selected your rating. This will help the team determine which notes to keep and which to publish using a bridge-based algorithm.
