Your X-Likes Are Now Private, You Horny Little Devils
In another departure from the old days of Twitter, X has started hiding posts you like from other users. The news follows owner Elon Musk’s previous promise that X would begin hiding public retweets and like counts until you go live, although the change doesn’t go that far.
In a post on @XEng , the official X tech update account, the site announced that while the number of likes will still appear below your notifications and you’ll still be able to personally see which posts you’ve liked, others will no longer appear. you will be able to see this information. Essentially, the Likes tab on your profile page is now private and more similar to the current bookmarking system.
The only exception is the author of the post, who will still be able to see which accounts liked his posts. (That way, you’ll still know when your mom likes a post about her grandkids.)
The change appears to have already taken effect, with Musk posting on his personal account, “Important change: Your likes are now private.” At the time of writing, I can see my likes page, but no one else’s. Overall, the number of likes is still showing up as normal, both in my home feed and when clicking through posts.
Previously, public likes allowed users to find posts they might be interested in by viewing what their friends liked. Competitor X Threads uses a combination of the old and new system: Individual profiles don’t show a “likes” tab, but you can click the number of likes on a post to see who liked it.
Previously, hidden likes were only available to paid users , although X CTO Haofei Wang explained in May the reason why they were closed to everyone. “Public likes encourage bad behavior,” Wang said. “For example, many people feel discouraged by disliking content that may be harsh for fear of retaliation.” (JK Rowling fans are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief.)
What’s suspicious is that X’s attempt to hide the likes came shortly after she fully endorsed porn on the platform .
