Don’t Miss June Tax Deadlines

While the deadline for filing most tax returns and paying off outstanding debt for the year has passed, not everyone can set it and forget it until next April. June is also the main deadline for both those paying 2024 estimated taxes and those who extended their 2023 filing deadlines.

Taxpayers who owe estimated taxes during the year

If you are self-employed, an independent contractor or freelancer, or otherwise earn income that is not taxed during the year, you may need to pay estimated taxes directly to the IRS each quarter. The second quarterly payment, covering income received from April 1 to May 31, is due on June 17.

I have previously written about how estimated taxes work and how to calculate and pay them. If you earned enough income to pay taxes in the second quarter of 2024, you should make a payment to avoid penalties. This will also help avoid a surprise bill when next April rolls around.

Taxpayers living abroad

US citizens who live and work in other countries are still required to file a tax return with the IRS, even if the income is earned abroad. These taxpayers receive an automatic two-month extension each year, and these returns are due June 17 (unless you file for an additional extension by October 16 through Form 4868 ).

Taxes are more complex for citizens living outside the US due to various foreign income exemptions and exemptions, so you may want to consult with a tax professional who is familiar with both the US tax system and the rules of the country in which you reside.

Taxpayers living in disaster zones

Residents of regions affected by natural disasters also receive extensions to the application deadline, although these specific areas and deadlines vary . If you live or do business in the following counties affected by disaster declarations, your 2023 tax returns and payments, which would normally be due in March or April, are now due June 17:

  • California: San Diego

  • Connecticut: New London County and Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nations

  • Michigan: Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Wayne.

  • Maine: Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset.

  • Tennessee: Cheatham, Davidson, Dixon, Gibson, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart, Sumner, Weakley.

  • Washington: Spokane, Whitman

  • West Virginia: Calhoun, Clay, Harrison, Roane (note that the deadline for residents and businesses in Boone and Kanawha counties has been extended again to November 1st)
