Five Easy (and Cheap) Ways to Incorporate This Year’s Trendy Colors Into Your Home Decor
If you’re looking to update your color scheme and get the look of some of 2024’s hottest colors without having to paint your entire home, you’re in luck: There are plenty of projects you can do to add a new color using just a gallon or even a liter of paint. If you’re looking for an easy DIY project to add a little color to your home, here are some ways to incorporate the hottest colors of 2024.
Every year, designers, as well as color experts from major paint manufacturers, select the color of the year based on global trends. This year, the color palette seems to be inspired by nature: lots of blue, but also green, darker blacks and browns, and some floral notes like yellow and peach.
Paint a little trim
To add color to a room without requiring a lot of paint, consider painting the door or window frame. For smaller frames, you’ll only need a quart of paint, but if your room has more trim, a gallon will suffice. Try adding some Renew Blue from Sherwin-Williams or some Cracked Pepper from Behr to the trim to brighten it up and update the color scheme. When painting trim, especially those that may be touched such as window and door frames, it is recommended to use a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint to avoid damage and make cleaning easier.
Paint the door
If you have doors that have seen better days, you can give them a fresh look with a new coat of paint. Standard size doors can be painted with a quart of paint without much damage, but if you need to apply multiple coats or if you have a large door, you should get a gallon just in case. Try painting the door with Blue Nova from Benjamin Moore or Dark Auburn from Sherwin-Williams. Remember that removing the door before painting often makes masking easier and speeds up the project.
Paint some equipment
If you have metal hardware that needs updating, you can try spray painting it with Krylon Bluebird . Spray painting drawers, cabinet pulls and handles, or furniture can give you a pop of color without spending a lot of money—just be sure to use spray paint outdoors or in another well-ventilated area. If you have wooden or drawer pulls, you can try adding some peach fuzz from the Pantone Color of the Year with a brush.
Paint a piece of furniture
If you have a piece of furniture that needs a new coat of paint, you can easily add the color of the year to your space. For most furniture, you can use a spray paint such as Satin French Blue from Rust-Oleum. Just lightly scrub the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to ensure the paint adheres well. If you have wood furniture that could use some reinforcement, you can try using a sky blue color like Upward from Sherwin-Williams to add a stripe or paint the edges. If you’re only painting a small piece, you’ll likely only need a quart of paint for this project.
Stencil of some color
Using a relatively small amount of paint, you can add some detail to the floor, wall, ceiling, furniture, or any surface large enough to accommodate the stencil. This project is best for surfaces that are already in relatively good shape, and you may have to add a layer of sealant on top to make it durable for the countertop or other high-touch areas. Use Limitless , Glidden’s Buttery Floral Yellow, or any other color we’ve listed, plus a stencil to add a colorful motif or pattern to your surface to instantly create a pop of color that’s affordable and easy to make.
