A Guide to Children’s Culture for Disconnected Adults: Song of Summer
Summer is approaching, and young people seem to be turning their attention away from big topics like “would you rather be in the woods with a bear or a man” to more light-hearted issues like crazy home design videos, candy salad. and Billie Eilish’s new song “Lunch.”
Viral Video of the Week: Billie Eilish – Lunch
I’m calling it now: Billie Eilish’s “Lunch” is the song of the summer. The 22-year-old pop star posted the video this week and it was viewed 16,697,734 times online in its first three days. The “Lunch” video feels like one of those generation-defining things. It’s just Eilish. There is no big concept; There’s not even a background. It’s just a performer singing her new song, but her image, song and moment seem to merge into one. The look is reminiscent of a ’90s suburban gangster: baggy jeans, snapback baseball cap turned to the side, silver grille. And this song is a fearless celebration of lust. Eilish sings, “It’s a lust, not a crush,” and “Do you need to sit down? I will become a volunteer.”
Eilish, who came out as a lesbian to Variety last year , had this to say about the song in a recent interview with Rolling Stone : “I wrote part of the song before I did anything with the girl, and the rest I wrote after. “I’ve had crushes on girls all my life, but I just didn’t realize it—until last year when I realized I wanted my face in my vagina.”
What does aura mean?
In Gen Z slang, “aura” means something like presence. It’s a bit of a 70’s connotation, but saying someone “has an aura” defines them as mysterious, powerful, and cool. The term was first widely used in connection with the Dutch language. footballer Virgil van Dijk to describe his ineffable charisma. It remained in the sports world for some time until the question “ Can you be fat and still have an aura” became popular in March? ” add some nuance to how the word is commonly used. First, it applies almost exclusively to men. Secondly, this is not the same as saying that someone is attractive (in the traditional sense). It’s similar, but not the same, as “rizz”. Rizz describes more of a person who is “well-spoken,” where “aura” seems to be a nonverbal part of coolness.
Another aura related trend that has popped up lately are TikToks with the caption ” The Most Aura I’ve Used at Level 1 ” where aura infused subjects “use” their aura on “lesser” people who often referred to as “level 1 scammers”. or ” People with low vibrations.” »
Poor home design
The “crazy home design” trend that’s taking over TikTok refers to CGI videos that purport to be home design tutorials but quickly devolve into absurdly complicated space-saving ideas or just complete insanity .
The trend started with a TikTok account called @designer_bob , which started posting similar serious design videos a couple of years ago. From time to time, some absurd elements were added to them, and people began to notice things like pushing children through walls. Then other accounts, most notably @homedesign369 , began posting absurd videos, including adding a strangely rich AI narrator who describes rooms and the people who build them . Videos like ” build a bedroom for 100 kids ” began to become popular, and repeated phrases from the videos such as “galvanized steel” and “eco-friendly wood veneer” became catchphrases in the comments section and the videos themselves. This is wrong. Does anyone seem to know if these accounts belong to the same person/people, but they do have similarities in style that suggest that may be the case.
New culinary trend: candy salad.
I don’t know if this is exactly “cooking,” but aspiring chefs on TikTok are making “candy salad.” You guessed it, candy salad is made by mixing a bunch of different candies together in a bowl. This rewarding activity is often done as a group, with each person saying their name into the camera before adding a sweet of their choice to a shared bowl. Some people get a little extra and do things like making a salad with just green candy for St. Patrick’s Day , but for the most part it’s just throwing candy into a bowl. Of course, what kind of candies you combine says a lot. Commentators on these videos give their opinions on how different sweets complement or contradict each other. Like you wouldn’t mix sour candy with chocolate if you weren’t brave .
The first star of the candy-salad genre is the child in this video . He is charming, speaks in a “panting child” style, and has brought with him two kinds of sour-spotted children. But the cool thing is that he says his name is “Under Dingus” and that’s enough to make you internet famous for 15 minutes.
Why is everyone “looking for a person in finance.”
Speaking of 16 minutes of internet fame: In a recently posted video, TikToker Girl On Couch dropped the song’s chorus and asked, “Can someone turn this into an actual song please, just for fun.” Something about the way she talks.” I’m looking for a man in finance. Trust fund. Six to five. Blue Eyes” attracted the attention of many people. Some people added the music she requested ( Alternate option . Or this one ). Or they used her video as an excuse to brag about their “ man in finance .” Or they made parodies . Some guys used this as an excuse to be assholes . Some people have used it along the lines of, ” I don’t need a man in finance .” This woman did the math and created a Powerpoint to estimate the likelihood that she would actually find a man who met these strict criteria. In her video, Girl on Couch also suggests that she may have written the song of the summer. She didn’t, but wrote the song for the next few weeks.
