The Best Ways to Save Space for Storing Winter Clothes
Once the cold days have passed and warmer weather has arrived, it’s safe to put away your coat and put your shorts front and center. However, if you don’t have a lot of storage space, the question becomes where to stash these cold weather items. Here are some ideas.
Winter Clothes Storage Idea #1: Your Luggage
This is my go-to trick: I only use my large rolling suitcase a few times a year, but it only needs to be stored in the closet because I really need it. Since my suitcases take up space anyway, I use the space inside them as extra storage. My winter coats, hats, scarves, wool dresses, tights and everything else I don’t wear in the spring, summer and fall go straight into my luggage.
You can make this even more efficient by purchasing luggage organizers and using them to keep everything separate. Try these:
If you’re wondering what happens when you have to pack for a trip, I’ll tell you, but it’s not exactly glamorous. I just take everything out of my luggage and throw it on the couch or something. The clutter won’t bother me since I’ll obviously be out of the house, and its presence will encourage me to unpack when I get back so I can stuff it all back into my suitcase.
Winter clothing storage idea #2: Under the bed.
Closet space can be hard to come by, but you probably have some space under your bed that you don’t use. It might be possible to make it work. For heavy items, under-bed storage on wheels is the best option so you don’t hurt your back hauling them back and forth at the end of the season or when it’s time to clean up.
If you don’t feel like spending money, place a few pieces of cardboard underneath everything you store under your bed so you can easily pull it all out at once.
Winter Clothes Storage Idea #3: Dual-Purpose Ottoman.
I’m a big fan of multifunctional storage furniture because it gives your space an organized look while hiding the fact that you might have too much stuff. An ottoman storage ottoman is a great idea for heavy blankets, coats, and other winter items because it’s spacious on the inside but serves additional functions in your room.
Why seasonal storage is important
Most basic decluttering methods have a few common elements. One tip that comes up often is that you need to store similar items together and make sure everything you have in each category has a designated storage space. Finding a place for seasonal items is key, because if you leave your coats in the summer or shorts in the winter, they will get pushed around and moved around as you constantly dig past them to find what you really need, and end up getting cluttered mess. It’s better to have one place to store things during the off-season to keep everything more organized and functional, leaving room only for what you really need and need access to at the moment.
