Orange Juice Iced Coffee Is a Warm Weather Thrill.
Once the temperature in New York City hits 70°F, cold brew coffee season will begin. It’s almost like an unofficial mid-spring festival, symbolizing the arrival of summer. This season I’d like to recommend a simple spin-off that will knock your socks off. This is an orange juice iced coffee and you should make it immediately.
I came across this chilled treat when I was in Bangkok last fall. I thought this was a cool, original idea from a coffee shop, but then I couldn’t stop seeing it. Orange juice iced coffee was everywhere. I admit, my first reaction was disgust. But the more I saw it, the more I realized how bad it could be?
My partner and I bought one to accompany our chili lunch at the food court stall (which also sold strawberry juice iced coffee) and drank it. We drank everything. Although it was strange at first, I couldn’t believe how delicious it was. I can only describe it as a pleasure to drink. In humid Bangkok, this ice-cold drink gave me the cooling sensation I was looking for. Maybe it was just the caffeine and sugar, but I felt alive. Black coffee is bitter, but the orange juice sweetens the drink without making it heavy like a can of cream. In fact, the entire drink remains light and refreshing until the last sip. If you’re a fan of the combination of orange and dark chocolate flavors, this drink is perfect for you.
How to Make Iced Coffee from Orange Juice
I use light roast black coffee, but I have seen people use dark roast and espresso to suit their preferences. Orange juice is entirely up to you. I used Simply Orange, but any brand or freshly squeezed drink will work. The procedure is as complex as I can handle in the morning:
1. Fill a glass with ice and add orange juice.
2. Pour black iced coffee and add a straw.
The ratio depends on your preference. I used equal parts orange juice and coffee, but if you like it sweeter, add more juice. Want to really taste the coffee, then add more or try a stronger brew. Drinking it is the second part of the journey because you can layer it and use a straw to determine exactly what you want to drink. I usually start by sipping different layers and then mix it together halfway through the drink.
The iced coffee celebration doesn’t end with orange juice. Your research into caffeinated drinks is limited to just the juice section of your supermarket. I haven’t tried other juice combinations yet, but there are tons of nectars and juices to try. If you’ve tried another juice and coffee combination that you like, please leave it in the comments, I’d love to hear about it.
