You Can Play the Fan-Made Fallout Game in Excel
Has your office job become so boring that wandering around a nuclear wasteland is starting to sound like a better alternative? We have a game for you! Just in time for the release of the Amazon Fallout series on Prime, YouTuber Dynamic Pear has managed to turn Microsoft Excel into a full- fledged Fallout -themed RPG , allowing you to relax in a world where war never changes.
The game is set in Mercer, a place set 145 years after some nuclear devastation vaguely reminiscent of Fallout . Players will explore this world through a full world map and eight quests, lovingly presented in pixel art using colored Excel cells.
According to Peer, much of the game is combat-oriented, using a turn-based system based on Dungeons and Dragons . Battles appear through pop-up windows that display enemy sprites next to text fields for statistics and actions.
“Combat is the core of this game,” Peer says in a short video introducing his project. “It includes DnD -style initiative, defense, range and movement mechanics.” While this may be a departure from recent games like Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 , it’s a great throwback to the tabletop SPECIAL system of the first two games.
” Fallout , but in Excel,” as the image on Peer’s website calls it, is actually not the first time Peer has created a game using Microsoft’s unorthodox Excel environment. Previous projects include Excel-based versions of Pokémon and Baldur’s Gate III , as well as original projects including a horror game and life simulator.
To play Pear’s Excel-based RPG inspired by Fallout , simply download the book from his website and open it in Excel. Unfortunately, the game uses Excel macros, so while Google Sheets and other Excel alternatives can open it, you’ll need Excel itself to play. Luckily, we have a guide on how to get Microsoft Office for free .
