Bring Some Sunshine to Your Frosty Weekend With Matador
It’s snowing in Portland, Oregon, and I’m thrilled (so far). As someone who was born in Mississippi and later lived in Los Angeles and Florida, I am always in awe of fluffy white things falling from the sky, at least until it lasts “too long” and I start to feel yourself trapped in this spot. frozen roads. (There is not much snow in Portland, so the city is not equipped for this for more than a few days.)
You might think this weather calls for hot cocoa and mulled wine, but a lot of snow means I’m running hot, and the constant heat leaves me dry, and I’m thirsty for juicy, thirst-quenching libations. (I understand that alcohol is the opposite of hydration, but a cold, shaken cocktail is much more refreshing than a hot wine-based cocktail.)
Luckily for me, I got too many items from Trader Joe last week, including a box of pineapple juice (a favorite of my teetotalers). He drank most of it last night, but left just enough for me to make some matadors, the Trader Vic cocktail I read about recently on Punch .
This drink is incredibly tart – almost too tart – but somehow it works. Tequila always pairs well with lime and pineapple, and the juice of the latter provides enough sweetness to keep the acidity under control. Punch recommends shaking the ice over the shavings, but regular cracked ice will work as well. Just shake it vigorously and for a long time. To make the Matador you will need:
- 30 grams of tequila
- 2 ounces pineapple juice
- 3/4 ounce lime juice
Pour everything into a shaker filled with cracked or crushed ice and shake until very cold. Strain into a compartment or similar vessel. Drink while looking at the snow and repeat until you feel the courage to step out into the snow.
