Where and When to See the Next Solar Eclipse
I have an eclipse of envy. I live in Los Angeles and we only had a tiny quarter eclipse yesterday – cool, but far from a total experience. I’m very jealous of my friends and family who witnessed the shadow of the moon completely engulf the sun, so I vowed to see the next movie. If you’re in the same boat, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you won’t have to wait too long to see a total solar eclipse. The bad news: you’ll have to travel a bit.
When will the next total solar eclipse be visible in the United States?
The next total solar eclipse to be visible in the United States will occur on March 30, 2033, but will only be visible in remote parts of Alaska, from Utqiagvik to Nome. Essentially, you’ll have to wait a long time for a likely eclipse located in an inconvenient location, but it’s ideal if you’re a fit person who doesn’t mind sparse infrastructure.
If an adventurous trip to America’s frozen tundra isn’t your thing, you’ll have to be patient: the next total solar eclipse visible from the lower 48 won’t occur until August 22, 2044. will be visible in three states: Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Twenty years is plenty of time to save up for a trip to Sioux Falls, but if you wait another year, a more convenient American eclipse will occur. August 12, 2045 is the date of the next “great American eclipse,” when the path of totality will cross most of the country, from northern California to Florida. The advantage of this eclipse is that it will occur in August, when there will likely be less cloud cover.
When and where can you see a partial solar eclipse in the USA?
Seeing a partial eclipse is relatively easy: at least two solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth per year. The next partial eclipse that will be visible in the United States will occur on March 29, 2025 and will be visible in the extreme northeastern United States, so if you are interested, check the Maine tourism website .
Where and when can you see a total lunar eclipse in the USA?
If you’re more interested in lunar eclipses than solar eclipses, 2025 will be a big year: On March 13-14, you’ll be able to witness a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth’s shadow will obscure the Moon everywhere below. 48 states, all of Hawaii and part of Alaska. While this lunar eclipse isn’t as spectacular as a total solar eclipse, it won’t require travel and you won’t have to wear those stupid glasses.
When and where can you see the total eclipse outside the US?
If you’re willing to travel, you’ll only have to wait until August 12, 2026 to see the total solar eclipse. It will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Russia and parts of Portugal, but in my opinion the best place to view the total eclipse in 2026 will be Spain. The Spanish Mediterranean coast is much more interesting to visit than Utqiagvik in Alaska, and the path to integrity runs from Barcelona to Madrid and on to the Balearic Islands. Book your ticket and accommodations for this complete experience in advance; it will most likely be crowded.
Here’s another dream eclipse location: Egypt in 2027. The path of the total eclipse on August 2, 2027 will be visible at the site of the Great Pyramids and will last more than six minutes. If you’re interested in spectacular eclipse photography, consider this the trip of a lifetime.
