You Can Now Recover Recently Deleted Instagram Posts
Instagram is adding a new “Recently Deleted” folder to the app menu that temporarily stores messages after you delete them from your profile or archive, giving you the option to recover deleted messages if you change your mind.
The folder has sections for Photos, IGTV Posts, Reels, and Stories. No one else can see your recently deleted messages, but as long as the photos or videos are still in the folder, they can be restored. Regular photos, IGTV videos and videos remain in the folder for up to 30 days, after which they disappear forever. Stories are kept for up to 24 hours before they are permanently deleted, but you can still access them in your story archive.
Instagram says it has added a feature to help users recover their posts if their accounts have ever been hacked and their content has been deleted, but you can recover your posts for any reason once this feature becomes available to you.
The Recently Deleted folder and the ability to recover messages appear in the latest app update, but may not be available to everyone yet. Find the Recently Deleted folder under Settings> Account> Recently Deleted . Make sure you have it before deleting the message first.
How to recover (or permanently delete) recently deleted Instagram posts
- Go to Settings> Account> Recently Deleted .
- Tap the Photos, IGTV Videos, Reels, or Stories tab to view all recently deleted content of that type.
- Select a message.
- Tap the “…” icon.
- Select “Restore” to undo the deletion and send it back to your profile or archive, or “Delete” to delete it permanently (note: Instagram support states that it can take up to 90 days to clear some content from its database).
It’s great that Instagram users can now recover prematurely deleted content, but make sure you take additional steps to completely remove content you don’t need. Instagram and other social networks have a bad habit of storing “deleted” data for longer than they should. Fortunately, there are ways to check their social media databases to find out what personal data these companies hold. Even if you don’t mind that these platforms store your information, leaks and data leaks are still a risk .
