How to Clear Cache on Android Smartphone

If enough time passes, all gadgets will start to slow down, including smartphones. Your Android may start to slow down randomly, and there are times when even rebooting doesn’t help. However, you don’t have to shell out hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on a new phone. Your old one may just need cleaning.

If nothing else speeds up your Android phone backup, you should try cache maintenance. When you use your Android phone, apps (and especially Chrome) start storing temporary files that they think you’ll need. They are used to speed up page loading and keep old files in memory. It’s great when you have a fast flagship with lots of extra memory. But if your Android phone is a little older, you’ll be surprised how much easier things will be if you let go of some of that cache.

In fact, it’s helpful to do this regularly—even every couple of weeks. This may seem a little counterintuitive since cache memory is supposed to speed up your phone, but lightening the digital load is often the answer for older devices.

How to clear the cache of any application on an Android smartphone

Sometimes a third-party application crashes and takes up all the cache memory. The Android Settings app will make it easy to find the culprit. Go to Storage > Applications to see a list of all installed applications. In the menu , switch to the Sort by size option and you’ll see the apps that are taking up the most storage space. The exact steps to find the Apps section may vary depending on your Android smartphone, but you can search for Storage or Apps to get there.

Browse apps and select the app to clear cache. Apps like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are the main offenders of the caching system. On the app screen, tap the Clear Cache button and the cache data will disappear instantly. Now go back to the list and do this again and again for at least the top 10 apps that are taking up the most cache.

How to Clear Cache in Chrome

The biggest cache eater on your smartphone is probably Chrome, and if you’ve never cleared your cache, you may notice a significant before and after difference. If you don’t use Chrome, make this your default browser. The changes will be the same.

Open your Chrome browser, tap Menu , and choose History > Clear Browsing Data . First, switch to the “All time” option at the top and make sure you check the “Cached images and files” option below. Then click the Clear Data button to clear the cache.

Continue to do this regularly for Chrome and the rest of your Android apps. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you should do the same there too .
