This TikTok Garland Hack Really Works, Guys
This year’s newest holiday decorating hack is so simple you’ll be surprised you haven’t done it your entire life: use a shower curtain rod to hang your holiday lights. This tip has been all over Instagram and TikTok for the past few weeks, so we tried it out at my home and turned a boring gray kitchen window into an expression of Christmas cheer—and we didn’t have to cut any holes. in the wall to do this.
Despite the Instagrammer’s comment above, it didn’t take 3 and a half hours or cost more than $50, but we were going for a more casual vibe. We made ours in about 45 minutes and the estimated cost for the shower curtain rod was $13; We kept the rest of the jewelry in a jewelry box.

And after:
I’ve looked at a few online tutorials on this and disagree with them on the main point: they usually say you should decorate the Christmas post and then screw it to the doorway. I say hang the rod first, decorate later . Cheap shower curtain rods aren’t very durable and you’ll be sad if they fall after you put them up, plus it’ll be difficult to screw them into place while they’re fully decorated. So make sure it’s durable and then decorate it.
The process of how to do this is really simple.
-
Buy a tension curtain rod for your shower curtain. We chose white instead of silver because it is less noticeable.
-
Decide where to place it . We chose a window over the kitchen sink, but wide doorways and arches would work too.
-
Install a shower curtain rod.
-
Decide on a topic. This is a “just see what works” type of project, but for best results, decide on a rough topic before you start. I’m of the “constraints foster creativity” mentality, so we looked at what we already had in our jewelry box instead of going to the store and being overwhelmed with options. We ended with the Christmas classic “red, white and green”.
-
Decide on the order in which the ornament will be placed. The order in which you place the decorations on the Yule Wand depends on what decorations you are using. However, be logical. Usually these are garlands, lights, decorations, but not always. First we tied the dangling Christmas ornaments to a rod rather than a garland, then we hung the garland, wrapped white garlands around it, added a bow, and then attached some Christmas baubles to the windowsill.
-
Use Ties : Ties are better than rope, tape, or any other method of attaching the garland to the rod. Zippers are easy, fast and durable. You may be able to get away with simply wrapping the garland around a rod, but a tie means you’re confident.
-
Choose the right tape : Get some wire tape and save yourself a lot of hassle.
Below are links to garlands and shower curtain rods, but you probably already have most of these decorations.
