You Can Disable Apple’s Built-in Text Prediction
Apple still isn’t big on generative AI, but it did eventually use machine learning to both improve AutoCorrect and provide built-in text prediction in macOS Sonoma , iOS 17 , and iPadOS 17. Now, when you type, Apple shows line suggestions for what you might want to type next. These predictions are grayed out – and in many cases they are actually good deals. When you see a forecast you want to use, you can press Spacebar and Apple will fill in the text.
But if you’re a fast touch-typer, you already know what you’re going to type. In my experience, it’s faster to type the rest of the word or phrase I have in mind than to pause mentally to decide, yes, that’s what I wanted to type, and use the spacebar to move on to the next word. . If this feature annoys you as much as it does me, the good news is that it can be turned off fairly easily.
How to disable built-in text suggestions in macOS Sonoma
For some, built-in suggestions can help you type faster on your iPhone keyboard. But this does not affect your typing speed on a physical keyboard when using a Mac. Any app updated for macOS Sonoma includes this feature by default, as do all of Apple’s own apps, so you’ll see it everywhere .
To disable this feature, go to System Settings > Keyboard , then under the Text Input heading, click the Change button next to the Input Sources option. In the pop-up menu, click the radio button next to Show embedded predictive text and click the Done button to save your changes.
How to disable built-in text suggestions on iOS 17
This feature is only available on iPhone 12 and later because it uses the device’s intelligence to process and suggest text.
Apple clearly didn’t think this would bother iPhone users, so they didn’t think about adding a toggle switch at launch. After listening to users, Apple will provide an option to disable just built-in text prediction without disabling the entire predictive text system when iOS 17.2 arrives .
You can access it right now if you’re using the iOS 17.2 public beta. Otherwise, you will have to disable the forecasting feature completely. If you’re using iOS 17.2, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Show built-in predictions . And if you don’t have iOS 17.2, you can turn off the Prediction feature in Keyboard Settings to get the same results.
