Try This IOS 14.5 Variant for Faster Security Updates
iOS 14.5 should be around the corner, judging by the four developer beta releases we’re currently working on. At this point, I wouldn’t envy those who would like to try an updated operating system on their main phone (if you’re going to be using the probably more stable public beta ). But there is one small change in iOS. 14.5 to appeal to those in beta or looking forward to the next version of iOS, which is a new, slightly redesigned software update interface.
Apple has not moved the software update option to a new location; you’re still going to visit Settings> General> Software Update to see all the latest feature updates and security fixes. However, Apple now divides them into two options.
You will find this new, granular approach to device updates by clicking on the regular Automatic Updates link, which takes you to the next screen:
Most people should leave these features enabled as they are, because it’s good to have a device that automatically updates with the latest core feature updates and more frequent security updates. However, Apple’s new approach seems to imply that it may even start offering security updates for devices that cannot receive the latest major iOS releases – pure speculation , but we would like to be able to receive security updates as soon as they are ready versus Apple. linking them to an iOS release that may not be available on older devices.
One quirk of the feature so far is that the “Install Security Updates” setting is tied to “Download New Updates” so you can’t tell your iPhone that you only want to download security updates automatically (and that you “I prefer manage feature-oriented updates yourself). I assume this is Apple’s intention because it would be strange for the company to offer you the ability to automatically download regular iOS updates, but selectively download security updates at your leisure. The latter is of higher priority than the former.
I just saw this option hit my device, so chances are good that Apple is still working on quirks. Stay tuned for this feature and any additional updates your device might want to install. If you’re not ready to upgrade to another version of iOS, at least you can fix any vulnerabilities on your device while you wait.
