First Steps to Take If a Natural Disaster Occurs While on Vacation
Part of the appeal of travel is to experience something new, but dealing with a natural disaster while on vacation is not exactly what most people have in mind. As extreme weather becomes more common, you may already have an emergency evacuation plan in place in your area . But what if a natural disaster occurs during your vacation? Here are some of the first steps to take.
What to do if a natural disaster occurs while on vacation
To be clear, we are talking about natural disasters occurring in the place where you are vacationing, such as the recent wildfires that hit parts of Hawaii . (Unlike natural disasters, which can affect your home while you’re away.)
Ideally , before you leave, you should at least make some preparations , such as making sure your passport doesn’t expire, letting family or friends know where you’ll be and how they can contact you, and registering your trip with the Department of State’s Smart . Traveler Registration Program (STEP) if you are traveling abroad.
But suppose you are already on vacation when some kind of natural disaster occurs. Here’s what to do first.
Be alert, be aware, take cover
Heed any warnings and announcements from local authorities, including emergency and public health departments. Follow instructions for evacuation, shelter, and any other safety precautions. Check the weather and news apps if you can still use your phone and/or surf the internet.
Keep valuables and documents with you
In addition to your travel documents, keep cash, credit cards, medicines, and any other important (and petty) valuables with you at all times .
Be together
If you are traveling with family, friends, colleagues or another group, it is best to stay together if possible. If you don’t have to spend time hunting down people, everyone can focus on keeping safe.
Upgrade loved ones at home
Choose a designated home contact and keep them updated on your whereabouts and situation when you have the opportunity. Instead of draining your phone’s battery, ask that person to inform other loved ones if necessary.
You can also use social media to communicate, or at least flag yourself as safe (if that’s the case). Also, turn on Find My or another location or tracking app that can help loved ones or emergency services find you if you get lost or trapped .
