“Web Roulette!” an Exciting Browser for Your IPhone
From time to time you come across an iPhone app that reminds you of the days when apps were made just for fun (and not to squeeze every last cent out of you with microtransactions). Web Roulette! is one of them. It’s a web browser with no tabs, no forward or back button, and no address bar. And it’s extremely addictive.
How can a web browser be addictive, you ask. Well, if you’re familiar with swiping on Tinder or jumping from one video to another on TikTok or Reels, webroulette! combines the best elements of these apps and brings them to every website you want to visit. You just might end up pinging the web a lot more than you would otherwise with a browser like Safari or Chrome.
After installing webroulette! add your favorite sites to the app. Start by clicking the menu button in the top left corner, browsing through the list of sites and adding the ones you like the most. You can also use the Add Site button to manually add sites that are not in your curated collection. (For what it’s worth, Lifehacker is in the Lifestyle section and you should definitely add it to your personal browsing roulette.)
When you’re done adding sites, click “Let’s Go!”. button in the upper right corner and start swiping. You’ll find yourself navigating from one site to another with ease and actually discovering a ton of interesting stuff that you might otherwise have missed.
Once you find something you like, you can bookmark it by clicking the heart icon in the top right corner. There’s also a Share button if you want to send anything you find to other people or post it on social media. You can find all the messages you bookmarked later by clicking the three lines icon in the top left corner and going to Favorites .
The best feature of Web Roulette! – just shake your iPhone. When you do this, a roulette animation will start and a random site will load (other than the ones you have chosen). This is very similar to StumbleUpon (RIP), a site randomizer that was extremely popular in its day.
As fun as web roulette! that is, it doesn’t have many features that are considered standard these days: no support for browser extensions, which can be a little inconvenient if, say, you want to read every site in dark mode . The app also lacks a reading mode , to make articles more pleasing to the eye.
However, web roulette! worth a good shake. It will remind you of the good old days of random oddities on the internet.
