Wake up With Cold Brew Overnight Oats
I’m always looking for ways to make oatmeal more interesting, and I have another strong advantage. I’m a big fan of boiling oats in a strong tea or diluting it with a steaming serving of sausages and pickles , but colder, lazier late-night oatmeal needs some love too. Use yesterday’s coffee or cold drink to spice up your breakfast.
This is one of my favorite ways to repurpose leftover morning coffee in the carafe. It’s not technically iced coffee, but any iced coffee will do. I often buy obscenely expensive coffee beans (this is how I feel about myself), so throwing unused coffee down the drain is not an option. Instead of wasting it, I pour it over oatmeal (along with a few other goodies) and put it in the fridge.
Rolled oats are made by mixing rolled oats with an equal amount of water or milk; all you need to do to make cold brew oats is to replace the liquid component with an equal amount of cold brew or leftover coffee. (You can adjust the ratio if you prefer a looser or tougher oatmeal.)
If you want to add yogurt, extracts, honey, sugar, or spices, now is the time. I’ve been enjoying peanut butter powder and honey lately. He has fantastic taste. The coffee is rich, but the nut butter holds it up well, so you get the coffee flavor in the foreground with a peanut butter aftertaste. I don’t know if it was because of the brand of cold drink I bought or if I just woke up on the right side of the bed, but my last batch had me blasting through all my errands very energetically. (I may have scared some of the neighborhood kids.)
Coffee is very similar to wine when it comes to additional combinations of ingredients, so consider the right flavors. Check the flavor description on the package and try adding cocoa powder, chocolate chips, maple syrup, toffee chunks, baking spices, coconut flakes, chopped nuts, cherries, or dark berries. Once you have added all your ingredients, stir the mixture and cover it. Put this in the refrigerator for at least five hours and up to five days.
Oats at night with coffee and peanut butter
Ingredients:
- ½ cup old fashioned oatmeal
- ½ cup cold black coffee
- 1 tablespoon peanut powder
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt
- A pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients together in an airtight container until everything is well blended. Cover and leave overnight in the refrigerator. Stir again before eating.
