This DIY Wheeled Umbrella Stand Doubles As a Planter

Keeping your umbrella out of the wind in high winds can be a challenge in the summer. While you can use a traditional base to keep your umbrella upright, they make it difficult to move and adjust. If you’re looking for a creative, eye-catching , and portable way to protect your umbrella by the pool or patio, here’s the perfect project.

Tools and materials needed to make a wheeled umbrella stand.

For this project you will need:

You will also need some plants suitable for growing in a container and in shade or partial shade as these will grow under your umbrella.

How to make a plant stand from a wheeled umbrella

Once you have collected all the materials, turn the container over so that the bottom is facing up. Use one of the rollers to mark where the wheels will mount by measuring two inches from the edge of the base and spreading them evenly across the bottom. Position the casters and use the base of the caster as a stencil to mark where to drill holes; then use the drill and drill bit to make the holes. If you are drilling into metal, it is helpful to mark the center of the holes with a scriber or an awl to guide the point of the drill.

Using the bolts with the nuts facing the inside of the container, secure the rollers by placing a lock washer on the side of the bolt with the nut. Tighten the nuts with ring wrenches or a wrench and a wrench, applying some force to the lock washer so that it does not unscrew if it rattles during use.

To plant an umbrella, place a 2-gallon bucket in a container and prepare the PVC pipe. Use PVC pipe to draw a circle in the center of the bucket lid and cut it out with a utility knife. Then, following the instructions on the package, mix the concrete and pour it into the bucket. Place the PVC pipe in the center of the bucket and place a lid on top to keep the PVC pipe upright while the concrete hardens. You have to poke some vent holes in the lid so the concrete can dry and set. Once the concrete is thick enough to hold the pipe upright, carefully remove the cap to allow it to continue to harden. While you’re waiting for the concrete to dry, drill some holes in the bottom of the container to allow for drainage.

Once the concrete is fully cured, fill the container with soil by covering the bucket and placing an umbrella. You can then add your plants and start using your new umbrella stand.
