You Can Track Your Teen’s Uber
Whether you think it’s great for young people who want a little more independence, or you think it’s a terrible idea that will put them in danger, it’s happening: Teenagers will soon be able to use Uber without their parents . Uber unveiled the new policy this week during its annual Go-Get Product Showcase. In addition to this change, Uber is also launching group rides and grocery orders, baby car seats and more.
When can teens use Uber?
Beginning May 22, teens will be able to ride from “select cities” in the US and Canada. But to do this, parents will first need to set up a family profile in the app to link their Uber account to their teens. Once this is completed, children aged 13 and over will be able to plan their own trips; soon they will also be able to order Uber Eats through their family account.
To set up a family account, follow these steps for Uber:
- Click Account > Family to create a family profile.
- Tap Invite Family > Teenager > Select Contact and select their name from your contact list.
- Make sure your billing information is up to date before your teen book their first ride.
- Your teen will then receive an SMS invitation and must complete a mandatory security check. Once this is done, they will be ready for their first ride.
The program will start in these cities, but Uber will add more over time:
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Bloomington, Indiana
- Cincinnati, Ohio
- Columbus, Ohio
- Dallas, Texas
- Dayton, Ohio
- Houston, Texas
- Kansas City, Missouri
- Minneapolis, Minnesota
- Nashville, Tennessee
- New York + suburbs, New York
- Phoenix, Arizona
- San Antonio, Texas
- Tucson, Arizona
How about security?
According to Uber, only experienced Uber drivers with high ratings will be allowed to make these rides with teens. The new feature will have a built-in real-time ride tracking app so parents can see where their teens are at any time, as well as the ability to contact the driver directly during the ride. They will also have an audio recording of the trip and a PIN code verification system so your teen knows they are getting into the correct vehicle.
Once you create a family account, everything your teen orders, be it food or rides, will be completely controlled by the parents. Keep in mind that you will only receive notifications about their activities, but you will be able to approve or disapprove of their trips.
