What’s New on Hulu in June 2023
Even with the ubiquity of old sequels in recent years, I didn’t expect this to appear: FX on Hulu will soon feature The Fat Monty , a multi-episode revival of a 1997 British comedy about a group of gray-haired unemployed steel workers who turn to sweeps to make some extra money. The film was an unexpected international success and was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, but it hardly looked like franchise material. How naive we were in the 90s!
The show reunites original cast members Robert Carlisle, Tom Wilkinson and Mark Eddy who two decades later date the boys and find they are still struggling in their work and family lives. Unfortunately, at least from what the trailer shows us, it’s unlikely they’ll be full again. Sigh.
Also imported from the UK, Somewhere Boy (June 7) is a acclaimed Channel 4 miniseries about a teenage boy (Lewis Gribben) who emerges into the world after spending his entire childhood in his father’s orphanage, who, mourning the death of the boy’s mother, in an accident, kept him at home, scaring him with stories about a world infested with monsters. The series has been met with rave reviews around the world and seems to be definitely worth watching.
Here’s everything else coming to Hulu this month, including the return of the 2022 critical hit The Bear (June 22) and the second season of Cruel Summer (June 6).
