This App Uses Artificial Intelligence to Organize Your IPhone Photos
I lean towards minimalism in the physical world, but when it comes to digital trash, I might appear in a Hoarders special. I’m especially bad with photos: I take a ton and don’t delete a single one. I never remove duplicates and blurry images. My entire photo library basically just lies there in a huge piece. But then I discovered GoodOnes, a free (for now) iPhone app that provides a simple interface to view thousands of your pictures and uses artificial intelligence to suggest which ones are the keepers.
We filter out bad photos, leaving only good ones
If you’re looking for a deep, sophisticated photo organization tool, look elsewhere. GoodOnes focuses on simplicity and ease of use. Once you download and install it, it will connect to iCloud and Google Photos to organize your photos in batches by date. From there, you have three options for each image: Featured, Other, and Trash. Best puts a star next to the picture they like, Rest leaves them alone, and Trash throws them out. It also allows you to put images in a photo book, share pictures directly with any application, and perform basic photo editing.
The purple octopus mascot of GoodOnes is cute, and the simplistic interface and playful approach to image sorting is effective and fun, but what really elevates GoodOnes beyond just using your photo gallery is the ability to select the best photo from a series of similar shots, recognize blurry images, and point to screenshots saved in the camera roll for easy deletion.
Artificial intelligence means people’s eyes will be open in your photos
I usually take a bunch of shots of the same subject to pick the best one. But I rarely get to the “choice” part, so every shot I take is just lying in the cloud, waiting for the day of universal deletion. GoodOnes does photo grading for you. It looks at groups of similar images and presents you with the best ones.
I asked the developers of the app how it actually works, but they were silent on their special sauce, saying only that its “AI takes into account the many attributes of each photo” to determine which one is better.
From my anecdotal experience, GoodOnes is surprisingly accurate. Over the past few days, I have looked at about 30 series of similar pictures, and so far, almost every choice has been correct. He chooses the photo that has everyone’s eyes open and best in focus. He even seems to take composition into account. According to the developers of the app, when you rate photos, it learns your preferences and adjusts its critical opinion to your standards, getting better as you rate more images.
Privacy and photo apps
With any photo app, there is a privacy concern. GoodOnes runs entirely on your phone and doesn’t upload your photos anywhere. This means it’s fast, private, and works offline. According to the developers of the application, this makes it ideal for a trip home by plane from a holiday full of pictures.
However, according to the App Store, the app collects data related to your contact information, identifiers (data that may be associated with you), usage data, and diagnostics, so keep that in mind when using GoodOnes.
Where to get Good Ones
GoodOnes is available for iPhone through the App Store . It’s completely free right now, although there are plans to subscribe to the service in the future, so jump on it quickly.
