This Shortcut Brings the Power of AI to Your IPhone
ChatGPT is everywhere , from Bing to niche Chrome extensions , but it’s clearly not in the Apple ecosystem. Sure, you can access ChatGPT fairly easily, but AI tools aren’t built directly into either iOS or macOS. For now, Apple may be tight-lipped about a new wave of artificial intelligence, but you don’t have to wait for the company to fill your devices with artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is ready for iOS integration when you do.
This integration is made possible by the OpenAI GPT API, which allows developers to connect their applications and services to the technology behind ChatGPT. This is exactly what Federico Viticci did with S-GPT , a fully functioning ChatGPT shortcut that you can install right now. Once configured, you can run ChatGPT directly on iOS or macOS and take advantage of all the features and functionality that a chatbot has.
All this convenience has a price, but it is not great. To run S-GPT, you need access to OpenAI API keys. You can generate these from a pay-as-you-go plan , where OpenAI charges based on usage. The rates are low ($0.002 for 1,000 tokens, and one token is about 0.75 words), so you’ll probably pay cents to use the shortcut. For reference, all Viticci S-GPT usage over the past month has been a whopping $1.50 in OpenAI costs. Go to the OpenAI billing page to register and then copy your API key from the API Keys section. How to set up an S-GPT shortcut
Setting up an S-GPT shortcut will only take a couple of minutes. (If you run into a wall, remember to enable third-party shortcuts in Settings > Shortcuts > Advanced .)
Download and install the S-GPT shortcut along with the required S-GPT Encoder shortcut on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. During installation, you will be prompted to add an API key. That’s it – no more settings required.
Now tap the S-GPT shortcut or ask Siri to open it. No matter how you activate S-GPT, a text field will appear where you can ask ChatGPT whatever you want, without limiting the length of the question. And yes, the shortcut supports conversation mode, so you can ask additional questions that the bot will understand and answer. At any time, you can export the conversation as a text file or copy the conversation anywhere.
Although S-GPT is not a replacement for Siri, it integrates well with iOS and macOS. The shortcut works in the sharing sheet, so you can share the article with S-GPT to get a quick summary; you can use it to quickly analyze words in an image with Live Text; and you can use it to check your calendars to make sure you have time for that meeting or hangout.
But what’s really impressive is the text editing. First copy the text to your iPhone or Mac and then ask S-GPT to do something with your clipboard. It can check for grammatical errors, shorten or lengthen your text, or rewrite text in a different tone—a specialty of ChatGPT. You can also ask to have your bugs annotated, with suggestions from the bot for changes. S-GPT can just be your new writing partner, whether you’re emailing your landlord to negotiate rent or trying to find the right words to write to a friend who’s going through this.
S-GPT will appeal to music lovers as the shortcut is great for creating playlists on the spot. If you meet a new artist, you can ask S-GPT to create a playlist of their top 10 songs. Anytime you’re feeling nostalgic, request a playlist of the best songs from the year you graduated from high school and S-GPT will fulfill all the requirements. You can even get more specific: ask the playlist to sort your songs by release date, newest to oldest, and the bot will do it. However, Viticci warns that music clues can be iffy because Apple doesn’t have a proper “Search Apple Music” action in the shortcuts.
We highly recommend that you check out Viticci’s blog post to learn in detail how the shortcut works and how it can be useful in your workflow.
