Honda Advises Against Driving These Seven Vintage Cars

Honda has issued a “Don’t Drive” warning for seven older Acura and Honda vehicles with unrepaired driver-side airbags. The bags are unreliable and, if thrown away, can scatter metal fragments that can seriously injure and even kill the driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

What happens to Honda airbags?

The warning is an update to the Takata Alpha airbag recall specifically for those drivers who have not yet repaired their airbags. According to the NHTSA, “the risk to vehicle occupants is appalling” and there is a 50% chance of failure. If the pumps rupture, lethal metal shards could shoot the driver in the face. According to Acting NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson, airbags can deploy even in a minor collision.

Which Honda and Acura are being recalled?

NHTSA estimates that around 8,200 Honda and Acura vehicles are equipped with deadly airbags today. The following makes, models and years have Alpha airbags:

  • 2001-2002 Honda Accord
  • 2001-2002 Honda Civic
  • 2002 Honda CR-V
  • 2002 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 Honda Pilot
  • 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL
  • 2003 Acura 3.2CL
