Fix Your Switch’s Goldeneye Controls to Look More Like Xbox
Goldeneye is back, baby! The game that changed first-person shooters is finally available on Nintendo Switch and Xbox for newbies and experienced gamers alike (sorry, PlayStation players). We already knew that there would be differences between the two platforms, namely that online play would be exclusive to Switch. But as it turns out, there’s another major difference we didn’t know about: Goldeneye ‘s controls are better on Xbox than Switch.
As highlighted by Polygon , Goldeneye developers for Xbox offer more modern controls on the Microsoft console than you’ll find on the Switch. With the Switch, Nintendo has stayed true to the original controller layout, which is ideal if you managed to pick up a Switch N64 controller (currently sold out), but if you’re playing Joy-Cons, you might find it hard to pick up a controller. controls first.
Because the layout assumes you have an N64 controller, you can’t fire from the right trigger – only the left trigger or the A button. You’ll also have to live with the right stick simulating the N64’s C buttons, which is fine , but that means you don’t have will be a modern dual control first person shooter game. On Xbox, however, you have a new “Diamond” control option that basically remaps the controls as you’d expect when playing a first-person shooter. Even if Diamond mode doesn’t suit you, there’s also a customizable control option that lets you remap the controls to your liking.
None of this means the game can’t be played on Switch, but it does mean you’ll need to forget your default control schemes in order to master Goldeneye . Unless, of course, you don’t want to change at all. Then you need to change the game for yourself.
How to Fix Goldeneye Controls on Switch
The first step is to fix what can be done in the game. Goldeneye on Switch brings eight original control schemes from the original N64 to the current Nintendo console. For better in-game controls, choose “1.2 Solitaire” from “1.1 Honey” by default. You will find this option by pausing the game in a mission and selecting Control. If you’re an experienced Goldeneye player, you’ll need to go into Settings and select Vertical for the Search Up/Down option, which will invert your controls. Old habits are hard to break.
To fix the rest, you need to use the switch settings to remap the buttons on your controller, as outlined in this Reddit post . Go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Assignments . If you’re using Joy-Cons you’ll need to work one at a time, but here’s the gist: remap the left analog stick to the right analog stick and vice versa. Then remap the ZR button to the ZL button and vice versa. This change will allow you to fire with the right trigger and aim with the left. If you like, you can also remap L to B to activate items with L, and remap R to A to swap weapons with R.
When you’re done, select Save as Preset Mapping, then name it Goldeneye – this way you can reset your controllers to be the default for other games, as well as return to the page and load your Goldeneye preset at any time. It’s also nice to note that since you’ve swapped joysticks, you’ll need to control the menus with the right joystick instead of the left.
