How to Get Rid of Diaper Bin Odor (and Keep It Odorless)

If a baby is one of the cutest, sweetest, most precious things we could ever imagine taking up space in our homes, then their diaper pail is the complete opposite. If you have it, I don’t need to tell you how awful it smells; you are well informed. However, there are several ways to make their smell obey – here’s how.

cleaning solution

To start with, in addition to being the source of an absolutely awful smell, it’s important to remember that the moisture-rich environment of a diaper bucket can also lead to mold. When cleaning, you want to eliminate not only stink, but also dangerous things. Parents at Mom Loves Best have a solution for both. You will need the following:

  • bura
  • warm water
  • white vinegar
  • Tea tree oil

Add two tablespoons of borax to a spray bottle, then two cups of warm water. Stir for a minute until borax dissolves, then add ΒΌ cup of white vinegar and 20-40 drops of tea tree oil. Shake it all up and then use it to clean the inside of that awful bucket.

Other deodorants worth trying

We love the options here, especially for pressing issues like these. For cleaning, we suggest the first recipe with borax, but the preservation of smell is also key here. To do this, Thulamama recommends spraying a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water into a bucket every time you empty it, or adding baking powder to the bottom.

You can also try sprinkling coffee grounds on the bottom – coffee grounds are great at neutralizing odors , which is why candle shops usually keep a small bowl handy so you can get one smell out of your nose before inhaling another.

NBC’s Today also recommends simply using a dryer sheet at the bottom of the bucket and filling the bucket on top of it. This can also help mask odors, but again, you’ll need to do a deep clean when you empty it.

Finally, Mom Loves Best says that when your baby is getting rid of solid food, you should flush it down the toilet before putting the diaper in the bucket. This is not particularly convenient, but will greatly reduce the smell.
