Try the FlyLady Cleaning Method
A clean home is a peaceful home, but what if the cleaning process can be peaceful too? This is the guiding principle of the FlyLady cleaning method , popularized by organizational guru Marla Seeley. Let’s take a look at what the FlyLady method is and why you should be using it right now. You won’t get instant results, but you will get long-term results that are more conducive to your feeling of overall cleanliness and peace.
What is the FlyLady cleaning method?
The Scilly Method has been around for over two decades, but it has found new life in TikTok, where CleanTok influencers introduced it to the digital masses.
The goal of using this method is to feel less stressed about cleaning and maybe even start to enjoy it. You do this by completely changing your approach to cleaning. On her website, Scilly instructs potential adopters of the method to break down their home into “zones” and set aside just 15 minutes a day to clean them at specific times each month. She promises that in a week the difference will be noticeable: “It didn’t get dirty in a day, it won’t become clean overnight.”
Here is how the zones are broken down:
- Zone 1 is your entrance, porch and dining area. You complete this zone in the first week of the month.
- Zone 2 is the cuisine that is prepared during the first full week of the month, that is, the first week that has seven full days.
- Zone 3 is the main bathroom plus another room in your home such as an office or storage room. This happens in the second full week of the month.
- Zone 4 is the master bedroom, its closets and bathroom during the third full week.
- Zone 5 is the living room, but since it’s not a whole week, it can overlap with zone 1.
Scilly’s main goal is to keep cleaners from burning out, so spending 15 minutes a day in the designated area during this week is sufficient. Routines are the key to cleaning as efficiently as possible, so make sure your 15-minute period is scheduled and you do it every day, ideally at the same time, so it becomes more of a habit than a solid routine.
