What’s New on Netflix in May 2021
After a rather sluggish April, Netflix is heading into the summer blockbuster season in May, packing up its release schedule for original films, high-profile pandemic acquisitions, and highly anticipated new seasons of several of its most watched TV series (or at least some have vocal fans on the net – we see you Castlevania stans). Will that be enough to help the streamer regain some of its dwindling market share ? Time will tell. (But probably not.) The main focus – on the Internet at least – will be on Army of the Dead , the next movie by Internet martyr Zach Snyder (Zach Snyder ‘s Justice League ), which seems to be doing everything possible to breathe new life into life. two tired genres, bringing them together: a robbery movie and a zombie thriller set in Vegas, just in case. Call it Ocean Undead , where Dave Bautista leads a bizarre team of mercenaries (including comedian Teague Notaro in a truly inspiring casting) as they break into a quarantine filled with zombie City of Second Chances to steal billions of wasted people. in casino vaults. Because during the zombie apocalypse, money will be worth something. Yes, that’s nit-picking because everything in the trailer looks pretty damn fun.
The second largest new “Netflix Film” is actually not a Netflix movie at all – the streamer acquired “Woman in the Window” (May 14) from 20th Century Studios after its 2020 release was delisted because of you know. Amy Adams’ stellar car was already a troubled production: it is based on a bestselling author under the pseudonym AJ Finn, who was almost canceled a few years ago for strange behavior while working at a New York publishing house ; and despite the presence of an Oscar directed by Joe Wright ( Atonement ) and a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts, the film went through lengthy reshoots after poor screenings . However, not every movie that comes out two years later is a disaster, right? Another noteworthy film: Oxygen (May 12), a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller from horror director Alexander Aji, in which a woman (Melanie Laurent) wakes up in a futuristic cryogenic chamber and is forced to rely on the presence of an invisible voice in her ears to survive and I hope (at least for me; I don’t like confined spaces) to escape. It looks intense, but what intrigued me most was that it was originally intended as a vehicle for … Anne Hathaway ? Netflix is also launching another high-profile comic book adaptation to join Umbrella Academy . Based on the Marc Millar ( Kick-Ass ) comic, Legacy of Jupiter is one of those revisionist things that “redefines the place of costumed heroes in popular culture,” which means you can probably expect a lot of gore and swearing. I really appreciate the dedication to silly Silver Age costumes; you can see what I mean in the trailer. In Otherwise, yes, at some point this month, we finally received another batch of great masters episodes None of Aziz Ansari (referring to the quasi-abolition , although he seems to have pulled out of it, being governed well with a ); According to IndieWire , this shortened 5-episode series will focus on the supporting role of Denise, played by Lena Whiteh, who is also co-writing with Ansari. The fourth season of the anime-influenced Castlevania video game , as well as the new Selena, Trash Truck and Love Death + Robots, is on the way. It looks like Netflix doesn’t want you to go out this summer.
