13 Classic Stories We Can’t Stop Making Movies
Born from Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, Pinocchio is both a mere pop culture landmark and the star of every number of films and television cartoons. The 1940 Disney animated version is by far the most famous and beloved, but the deceitful little puppet survived a full year, seeing no less than three adaptations in 2022: a Russian animated version with an ill-conceived English dub , starring Pauley Shore. wooden boy; a remake of the 1940 classic from director Robert Zemeckis that just started airing on Disney+ ; and a stop-motion animated version from Guillermo del Toro, debuting later this year on Netflix, which is almost certain to be the best of the three.
Pinocchio isn’t even particularly popular in the remakes, and he’s still all over the place – Wikipedia has a whole subcategory listing about 30 film and television adaptations, and it doesn’t even include Pinocchio’s Erotic Adventures from 1971 (“It’s not his the nose is growing!”). Maybe it’s because of the versatility that lies at the heart of the story of the wooden boy striving to be more than he was created to be. This, of course, has nothing to do with the fact that a famous character is in the public domain . Pinocchio is not the only character who is often reimagined – far from it, anyway. Some enduring characters and stories have been adapted for the screen (large or small) many dozens of times, so many that we probably don’t even know about most of them. These are some of the decks we pulled from the majority, as well as the best (or at least the most interesting) doubles.
