One of the most pressing questions when Apple introduces a new iPhone is what kind of battery does it have? Apple doesn’t usually share detailed battery specs, so it can be difficult to judge battery life without hands-on testing, especially since the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max ‘s new always-on displays raise even more questions about battery drain. But thanks to information from Apple and reports from other tech publications, we’re able to piece together important information about the iPhone 14’s battery life, size, and more.
What is the capacity of the iPhone 14 battery?
Let’s start with capacity, that is, how much energy a battery can store. Here is the battery capacity for each of the iPhone 14 models, according to GSMArena :
- iPhone 14: 3279 mAh
- iPhone 14 Plus: 4325 mAh
- iPhone 14 Pro: 3200 mAh
- iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4323 mAh
Compared to the iPhone 13 models, the battery capacity of the iPhone 14 is almost the same. The base iPhone 14 is only 2.18% larger than the iPhone 13, while the iPhone 14 Pro is 3.43% larger and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is about 0.42% smaller. There was no iPhone 13 Plus, so it has nothing to compare to the previous generation hardware, but it has a bit more features in the iPhone 14 lineup.
You might think that the same battery capacity means the iPhone 14’s battery life is equivalent to that of the iPhone 13, but that’s not necessarily the case. The capacity specifications alone are not indicative of a device’s battery life, but these numbers are interesting to note since the dimensions and form factors of the iPhone 14 devices are mostly identical to the iPhone 13s. We can assume that the physical size of each battery and the space they take up in a phone case is also about the same.
How long will the iPhone 14 battery last?
Unfortunately, it’s hard to answer right now. We won’t know the true performance of a battery until reviewers test it. The battery capacity gives us some idea, but it’s only part of the puzzle. You may have the biggest smartphone battery of all time, but if the phone is packed with power-hungry hardware and features, it may only last a few hours.
Fortunately, this does not apply to the iPhone 14 or its siblings. Again, Apple doesn’t offer detailed battery specs, but the company said the iPhone 14 has “the longest battery life ever” capable of 20 hours of continuous video playback, 95 hours of audio playback and, overall, has “all day offline work”. Those numbers include the Pro and Pro Max, despite their always-on displays – something you’d assume will impact battery life a bit (unless you apparently have an Apple Watch ).
However, because the iPhone 14 Plus doesn’t have an Always-On display, has more modest hardware compared to the Pro and Pro Max, and has the biggest battery capacity, it might be the longest lasting out of the entire lineup. Although, to be precise, these are just assumptions. We’ll know for sure as soon as the reviews come out in the coming weeks.
iPhone 14 battery replacement cost
The latest information we know about batteries isn’t about battery specs, it’s about how Apple deals with repairs.
9to5Mac reports that Apple’s next iPhone battery replacement will be more expensive, from $69 for previous models (or $49 for iPhone SE) to $99 for the iPhone 14. This price increase only applies to the iPhone 14 line, as the cost of replacing the battery for older devices do not change. We’re not sure why this service is more expensive for newer models, but it’s unlikely that most users will need this service as it takes years for smartphone batteries to drain. However, this is a noticeable change.
