You Need to Have a “Suburb Day”
Every resident of the suburbs is familiar with the “day of the city”. Why shouldn’t the opposite be true? Why don’t stressed-out townsfolk use their suburbs as a way to escape for a few hours?
Apartment Therapy justifies planning a “day in the suburbs” as a way for city dwellers to get out of town for a few hours and relax. This is not about hating the city and romanticizing the suburbs; it’s about recognizing the underappreciated amenities a mall can provide. Listen, this comes from a New Yorker who never intends to leave the city for good. But here’s why you (and I) should consider including a suburban day as a way to shake up our routine and recharge.
Benefits of Suburban Day
When planning a real getaway seems impossible, a quick day trip is an underrated solution. Unfortunately, depending on where you live, you may not have a car, which is pretty much essential for suburban work. Once you purchase transportation, here are a few perks that will draw you to the nearest suburban area:
- Cheaper prices. This is by far the most engaging aspect of your day. Stop by a local restaurant, get a haircut and shop for much better prices than at home in the city.
- Take a break from the crowd. Enjoy walking down the street without pushing. It’s especially nice to find a park or green space – even if it’s smaller than yours in the city, it’s important to take a break from other people.
- Not everything smells like trash all the time.
- Less noise pollution.
- Easier driving. Remember how you could hit 15 mph?
- The ability to make eye contact with strangers. Results may vary.
Your day in the suburbs is all about free space and clearing your mind, whatever that means to you.
