Nearly 1.4 Million of These Power Tools Are Part of a Massive Recall
When using power tools, we understand that we will be working with potentially dangerous equipment and (ideally) take the proper precautions. We also know that even if someone has years of experience using them, user errors and accidents can happen. But you don’t expect the instrument itself to turn against you.
Unfortunately, this is what happens to the owners of some DeWALT miter saws and is what has prompted the company to recall nearly 1.4 million of its products, according to a notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) . Here’s what to know about a massive power tool recall and what to do if you own one of the saws in question.
Why are DeWALT miter saws being recalled?
DeWALT is recalling approximately 1.4 million 12-inch sliding joint miter saws because the back guard of the tool could break or come off, causing projectiles to hit the user or any bystanders, which could lead to direct contact with them. with a blade, according to CPSC .
As of August 4, DeWALT has received 571 reports of this defect and safety hazard, including nine reports of lacerations. The saws were sold at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and other hardware stores both nationwide and online, as well as Amazon and other online retailers from April 2019 to May 2022, priced between $600 and $820.
Which DeWALT miter saws are subject to the recall?
The recalled DeWALT miter saws are yellow with black accents and the company logo and meet all of the following criteria:
- Date codes between 2019 04 and 2022 04
- Model Numbers : DWS779, DWS780, DHS790
- Does NOT have a green dot on the nameplate
- Does NOT have a black dot on the saw arm
The model number is printed on the nameplate of the saw.
The date codes on the DWS779 and DWS780 are located on the black plastic motor end cap next to the nameplate. The date code on the DHS790 is located on the outside of the yellow plastic housing next to the batteries.
What to do if you have one of the recalled saws
If your miter saw is subject to a recall, stop using it immediately.
While DeWALT will contact all known buyers directly, it’s not clear when this will happen, so you’re probably better off contacting the company yourself. Customers will either be provided with a free repair kit or will be required to bring their saw to a DeWALT service center for repair.
You can contact DeWALT at 800-990-6421 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm ET or through the dedicated recall page on their website .
