A Child Culture Guide for Disconnected Adults: What’s in the Johnny Depp Papers?

This week’s Adult Guide to Out of Touch features a slew of unrelated nonsense from the world of youth culture, including an informative dump of obscene material in the seemingly never-ending tangle between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, a look at the Minecraft Musical Theater Community, and a viral video from Dawn of Time that will make you scream “GYAT!”

New documents put Johnny Depp in a terrible light

The saga of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard seems destined to go on forever. Both parties are appealing the rulings against them, and 6,000 pages of court documents have recently been uncovered that shed new light behind the scenes of their toxic relationship. The cost of sending and posting documents was crowd-sourced by Depp’s supporters as part of an effort orchestrated by lawyer Andrea Burkhart , apparently intended to dig up more dirt on Heard, but it didn’t work; documents don’t necessarily flatter Johnny Depp. Among the revelations: Depp’s team wanted to present nude photos of Heard as evidence and tried to use against her the death of Heard’s girlfriend, text messages in which Depp calls himself a “fucking savage” and “crazy” are not allowed as evidence. If you’re feeling like digging through celebrity dirty laundry, all 6,000 pages are available online for you to peruse.

Slang of the week: What does ‘gyat’ mean?

If you’ve seen the word “gyat” or “gyattt” in the comment section of a YouTube or TikTok video lately, you can mentally replace “hell”. But not “hell” in a pejorative sense; more like how a young straight man might say “DAMN” when a curvy young woman walks by. Created by gamer YouRAGE on twitch/YouTube, it’s pronounced “ge-YAT!” and generally screaming. For a great example of what this might sound like in a conversation, check out this video . As an abbreviation, gyat can also mean “gather up your courage”, but I doubt it was used that way very often.

Groups of Friends on TikTok

Young people on TikTok and Twitter are learning about the structure of their social circles and it will remind you of a time when you had enough energy to be interested in the people you surround yourself with. The #friendgroup tag on TikTok is filled with friendship- based memes , heartfelt/touching tributes to friends , and even cartoons ! My favorite talker friend is Ethan Davitt, who details many different groups of friends using pop culture references, such as calling a group of friends with an opposite sex leader the Wizard of Oz; when two groups of friends team up, it’s The Lord of the Rings .

The Lion King musical recreated in Minecraft

The things Minecraft users do sometimes make me take a step back and say wow. Who knew there was a thriving community of theatergoers using the game to recreate stage musicals? One of the toughest jobs is Orrg Studios ‘ work on The Lion King. Virtual theatergoers enter the Minecraft version of Hamburg’s theater district, walk to their seats in a customized recreation of Theater im Hafen, and then, with the help of assistants, sit down and watch a full-length version of The Lion. King performed by virtual puppeteers.

Unlike a physical show, guests can take a peek behind the scenes to see how everything works. While reading about The Lion King , I plunged into the unique rabbit hole of Minecraft ‘s virtual theater, where fans have recreated the musical Shrek , Aladdin , and other shows with such a level of passion and attention to detail that it’s truly mind-blowing. . You can watch most of The Lion King on YouTube , but it’s not the same as actually attending a virtual show. By the way, it’s completely free, but for technical reasons, only 20 guests can watch each show.

Viral Video of the Week: Primitive Technology: Trebuchet

This week’s viral video is from YouTube’s favorite nature boy, Primitive Technology. This week, a naked dude from the beginning of time is doing a trebuchet ! Past projects have taught us how to make a tiled roof using only Stone Age tools, detailed the cultivation of yams , and explained everything there is to know about weaving . All of his walkthrough videos are strangely mesmerizing – they don’t feature voice-overs, music, or any production enhancements, just pure prehistoric action – but the trebuchet offers what a thatched roof doesn’t: an ending in which launches a heavy stone through the air to smash to the target. After the apocalypse, you’ll rush to watch this channel and learn how to fight off looters stealing your wheat, only to find you have no electricity, let alone an internet connection, so watch and learn now before it’s too late.
