What does UL mean on the label?

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, which describes itself as a “non-profit public safety organization.” UL, foundedin 1894 to create a safe environment for life and work, the main function was and remains to test and certify products for safety. While there are other organizations that offer the same security testing services, UL is the best known.

The first iteration of the UL label appeared in 1906 and certifies that individual products have been tested and meet the organization’s safety standards. Today it means the same. Having “UL Listed” on a product label assures you as a consumer that it will work properly and does not pose a safety hazard to you. In other words, if you have to choose between buying a product with a UL mark and buying the same type without it, choose one with it.

Difference Between “UL Listed” and “UL Recognized”

Let’s say you’re buying a refrigerator. You may notice “UL Listed” on the label attached to the device’s power cable. And while you were at it, you also bought a washing machine with “UL Recognized” stickers on a few separate parts. What is the difference between them?

According to UL , “Listing by UL means that UL has tested representative samples of a product and determined that the product meets certain, defined requirements.” Meanwhile, “UL Component Recognition” means that UL has evaluated components or materials intended for use in the finished product or system. These components are only for end use products that may be eligible for UL certification.”

So basically, “UL Listed” means that they have tested the product (as a whole) and its safety in operation, while “UL Recognized” labels are placed on the specific parts of the product that are tested.
