At WWDC 2022, Apple finally gave us a sneak peek at the upcoming macOS update: macOS Ventura will be out in Fall 2022, but it’s already available as a developer beta (if you’re into adventure).

It’s not a revolutionary update, but it does bring some nice additions that can definitely make your life easier. Here are some of the best features coming to your Mac later this year.

Stage Manager helps you clean up your messy windows

If you have dozens of windows open at the same time and find it difficult to keep track of them, macOS Ventura may have a solution for you: it’s called Stage Manager, and it’s a unique approach to multitasking.

After activation, all open windows are located on the left by applications and groups. Your current window is the only thing you see beforehand. But you can add new windows to the group, reorder them, or quickly switch a whole new set of windows from the Scene Manager on the left.

Your iPhone can act as a Mac webcam, no setup required

This feature is two years late, but Mac and iPhone users will appreciate it: you can finally use your iPhone’s rear camera as your Mac’s webcam without any configuration. Just connect your iPhone to your Mac (you don’t even need to unlock it) and it will show up as a camera on popular video conferencing apps.

Because it’s an iPhone camera, you can access features like Portrait Mode and Studio Light that blur the background and improve the lighting around the face. Apple is also trying to do something different: its new “Desk View” feature provides a top-down view of what’s on your desk using the iPhone’s ultra-wide-angle sensor (again, the iPhone doesn’t need to be moved at all).

Passwords want passwords to be a thing of the past

Three big players in the tech world — Apple, Google, and Microsoft — are pushing for a password-free future . Instead of a password, you’ll have a passkey, which is a secure key that’s linked and stored on your device and authenticated with Touch ID or Face ID. Apple calls its version simply Passkeys.

If the website or app supports it, you’ll be able to sign up and sign in using just Face ID or Touch ID on all of your devices. No password to remember, no password to crack. And don’t worry: if you’re using a Windows computer, you’ll be able to sign in with a QR code through your iPhone.

Shared tabs appear in Safari

Collaboration is a key word for Ventura, and it applies to Safari as well. You can share entire groups of tabs with people using Messages. Once someone joins a tab group, they can add more tabs and you can track their progress in real time.

The Mail app is getting some much-needed usability updates.

After years of abandonment, the Mac Mail app is finally getting the attention it needs. The Mac app has a ton of new features, starting with the new “Undo Send” feature that lets you quickly stop an email before it’s sent. You can also schedule emails to be sent later.

Apple has also improved the search feature. Recent searches are saved and autocomplete results are more accurate.

Finally, a shared photo library for your family

It’s not exactly a Mac feature, but it will be great to use on your Mac. The Photos app gets a separate shared iCloud Photo Library that works with Family Sharing.

Family members can automatically add photos to the library or move photos and videos manually. iCloud Shared Photo Library gives everyone the same access rights, so you can easily organize and edit all your family vacation photos on your Mac.

Other Fun macOS Ventura Changes

There are many small changes expected in macOS Ventura, such as:

  • Dedicated clock and weather apps.
  • Spotlight search is now richer in design, allowing you to see more information about movies, TV shows, and celebrities. In addition, you can now view files from search results. A text search will show results for photos.
  • Updated Home app (same as in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16).
  • Dedicated “My Sports” section of Apple News with updates and live scores.
  • Live Text support for paused videos.
  • Real time subtitles for live audio.
  • Instantly switch FaceTime calls between iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Supported Mac since 2017.

macOS Ventura dates back to 2017, so even a six-year-old Intel MacBook will get new features. Here is the complete list of supported devices.

  • iMac – 2017 and up
  • iMac Pro
  • MacBook Air – 2018 and up
  • MacBook Pro – 2017 and up
  • Mac Pro – 2019 and up
  • Mac Mini – 2018 and up
