How to Watch Apple WWDC 2022
WWDC 2022 is coming soon. While much of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is actually a series of presentations and events for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS developers, most of us are focused on Apple’s main keynote. Here, the company showcases new features and changes coming in the development process on various software platforms, and sometimes also introduces new devices. Here’s how to watch this year’s presentation.
What will Apple announce at WWDC 2022?
It’s impossible to know exactly what Apple will reveal during its keynote as the company makes very few official announcements up front. However, based on precedent and hearsay , we have some assumptions that are most likely to come true.
First, it’s almost certain we’ll see the next iteration of Apple’s software across the board. Apple always uses these keynotes to present the latest operating systems the company has in store, and we don’t expect anything different this year. We expect to see previews for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13 (probably Mammoth), watchOS 9, and tvOS 16.
Apple’s only preview before the conference focused on upcoming accessibility features . The company showed off new features such as door detection, enhanced Apple Watch access controls, live captioning, new VoiceOver languages, the ability to share game controllers with a second person, and other new features. While the company hasn’t confirmed which version of iOS will get these features, it’s likely that they will arrive in iOS 16.
Rumors about iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13 and watchOS 9
According to rumors, this year there were not so many of them. Most of the rumors we have are for iOS 16: we should expect new changes to the notification center, lock screen, and focus, and we could get features like widgetized wallpapers and a social media overhaul for messages. We may even see always-on displays for the first time on an iPhone, but they will most likely only appear on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max later this year.
Apple is rumored to be planning big changes to multitasking and windowing for iPadOS 16. Don’t get too excited, though – every year we hear that this update will finally make the iPad a true laptop killer. I doubt it, but hey, we can hope. Expect many of the iOS 16 features to come to iPadOS 16 as well.
9to5Mac believes macOS 13 will be called “Mammoth” and have some M1-exclusive features now that Apple has phased out Intel chips from the lineup. We may also finally see an overhaul of System Preferences that will make it more like the Settings app found on iPhone and iPad. If Apple wants to make its ecosystem feel whole, this change could help.
WatchOS 9 could bring some modest changes if limited rumors are to be believed. We may see optimized wallpapers for larger watch faces, improved low power mode and new workouts, and other watchOS quality of life changes.
Perhaps we will see a colorful MacBook Air M2.
If Apple digs deeper into the hardware, a new MacBook Air can be expected. This laptop has been rumored for a while, promising a color upgrade reminiscent of the M1 iMac, Apple’s upcoming M2 chip, and MagSafe. Apple may well skip this announcement in favor of sticking to the software strictly, but it’s best to keep an eye on it.
