How to Make Store-Bought Dinner Buns Delicious As Hell

One of my favorite genres of hacks is the “elevation” of the store bought. Making a box of cake or cake mix with homemade flavors, making mayonnaise , using fast food chicken to make chicken salad , these are things that I really like, baby.

Store-bought buns are ripe for this kind of riff. Standard mods involve smearing them with oil (generally garlic butter) and adding things (herbs, cheese, and the like) to them, but you can make it even weirder, and you should. After all, you just saved a ton of time by outsourcing the dough; you can take extra moment to zhoosh.

Mix (and layer) your fat

Before putting the buns in the oven to heat them up – and you should always reheat them – melt some fat and brush the top of the buns with it. Buttered buns are popular for one reason: butter tastes good, but other fats taste good too, and it would be a mistake not to give them a chance.

Melted duck fat, chicken schmaltz, and bacon fat can be used to give the bread a smoky, tangy flavor. Just apply them like oil. Then, when they come out of the oven, brush them again with a brush. You can keep the same fat – and make double duck fat or bacon fat – or you can mix it up and finish them with butter or, if you want a tangy-sweet taste, honey butter (or any butter from that butter ). flight ).

Put soft things in them.

The best dinner buns brown on top, but adding fresh herbs, garlic, and other toppings on the outside of your dinner buns can cause those herbs and toppings to burn (or fall off). Putting this substance inside the bread prevents this by softening the herbs rather than burning them; and melting rather than browning any cheese.

It’s easiest to do this with fully cooked and attached buns (like King’s Hawaiian) because you can cut them all at once (just like we do with these breakfast sliders ). Cut the rolls in half, being careful not to separate them from each other, then grease both sides. Sprinkle herbs, cheese, minced garlic, etc. on the bottom half, then place the other half back on top. Grease the top and sprinkle with crunchy flakes of salt or Parmesan (cheese that tastes great when browned) before placing them in the oven or roasting pan to brown.
