What’s New on Netflix in May 2022

If you were in high school in the 2010s, your experience didn’t quite resemble on-screen images like The Breakfast Club, The Mean Girls, or even High School Musical. There was no that classic “status quo” when the pitching opposed the Goths and theatergoers. Over the last ten years, the rules and hierarchy of high school have been more like that “first day of school” scene from 21 Jump Street in 2012 . To be cool, you have to be… a good person?

A shift in high school rules is at the forefront of the Netflix comedy Senior Year (out May 13). The film takes place between 1997 and 2017. Rebel Wilson stars as Ruby, the super popular cheerleader who wakes up from a 20-year coma ready to regain her title as the most popular girl in school. But while she was in a coma, high school changed. There is no clear social ladder by which to climb the ladder separating “support captain” and “loser”. To be popular, Wilson’s character understands, you need to be liked by everyone . All the time. (CUT TO: Instagram Live.) Wilson says senior year “is like the wildly funny love child from Bring It On and Never Kiss .”

I’m looking forward to seeing how Senior Year fits in with other recent descriptions of what high school is like for Gen Z. If one movie nailed the whole “good kids are tough kids” idea, it was Booksmart . And if one TV show did it, it was American Vandal . (But that’s another essay for another time.)

Some of this month’s other new titles stand out for their breathtaking potential: Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive , a documentary about freediver Joanna Nordblad as she attempts to break the world record for the distance covered under ice in one breath; Cyber Hell: Internet Horror Unveiled , a documentary about the hunt to destroy a South Korean online chat network rampant with sex crimes; and Clarke , a thriller based on the controversial criminal that inspired the term “Stockholm Syndrome”.
