Steam Wine Glasses Without Stains

Drinking wine is fun, stylish fun, and nothing ruins great fun like little smudges and smudges. If I’m serving wine to friends, family, and/or enemies, I need my glasses to sparkle, baby. After all, I have a (very specific) reputation to uphold. (I may not be what society calls me “cool”, but I’m clean .)

How did these spots get there? I will never know but they must be defeated, gone and driven from my sight. Even if my guests don’t notice the stains, I will notice them and spend the evening obsessed, my eyes focused on glassware when they should be focused on faces and words. Luckily, there’s a very easy way to rid your dishes of those annoying smudges and dirty fingerprints: steam.

This tip came to us from Food52 , but steam is the way most restaurants and bars sparkle glassware (although they usually have large-scale methods for steaming an entire batch at a time). The home method is simple: bring water to a boil, catch steam in a glass, and wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth:

So, here’s how it goes. Arrange glassware shortly before guests arrive. Turn on the kettle or boil water in a saucepan. When the water boils, turn off. Now hold each glass by the stem and flip it over the water just enough to boil the steam (if it doesn’t have a stem, be careful not to hold it too close to the evaporating water). Then take a soft, clean microfiber cloth with your free hand and buff. You’ll know you’re done when there’s no steam left inside the glass. Repeat on the rest of the glassware and watch them sparkle and shine.

After the glasses have sparkled, your only task is not to apply lipstick for the rest of the evening. (Lucky for you, I have a tip for that too.)
