The Best Types of Bras for Different Types of Clothing
Finding the right bra can make a huge difference in how your clothes fit and how you feel in them. However, certain types of bras work better with certain tops. Here are the best bras for different types of clothing.
Based on some of Refinery29’s expert interviews (and a lot of additional research we’ve done on each), here’s your bra checklist:
- T-shirt: As the name suggests, this type of bra is perfect with t-shirts. There are no frills in it that would be noticeable under a T-shirt.
- Push-up: If you wear a lower cut in the front and want to show off the cleavage, try a push-up bra. The combination of padding and bra style gives you a lift without showing the bra under the top.
- Sports: You are probably already familiar with sports bras. Consider the racing back design as it offers more support. Make sure the level of support is appropriate for your activity – walking requires lighter support than running.
- Balconette: Suitable for tops with a lower cut because the bra lifts it up a bit, but the cut is not visible.
- Bandeau: Great for tops with little or no straps or large armholes. They tend to be more decorative than a regular bra, so if someone gets a glimpse of it, it won’t look like underwear. Please note that this type of brand does not provide much support.
- Strapless: Made specifically for tops or dresses that don’t have standard straps.
- Bra pitted: ideal if you need a bra with a smaller structure, for example, with free riding. Like the bandeau, this bra provides less support than other types.
- Deep cut is better suited to the tops or dresses with plunging neckline.
- Contour: Ideal for tops that fit better and when you don’t necessarily want to lift your neckline. The cups of this type of bra are more structured, which gives the breasts an even, rounded appearance. This type of bra will help make your breasts more similar in size.
Of course, you don’t have to own every one of them, but depending on the tops in your closet, you may want to have several of these on hand.
For most bras, it is best to buy bras in a color that matches your skin tone because they are less visible under shirts that are lighter in color, sheer fabric, or unusual cuts.
