Work With the Largest Pay Gap for Women
The gender pay gap is getting a lot of attention. This problem needs to be addressed early, but it can be helpful to know the industries in which the gap is greatest. Here are the least paid jobs for women, based on average earnings.
Wall Street, 24/7, analyzed data from the current 2014 population survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to determine the “worst” paid jobs for women. These are the jobs with the largest difference in the percentage of earnings between women and men. Here is a list of them along with the indicated percentage:
- Personal financial advisors: 61.3%
- Physicians and surgeons: 62.2%
- Dealers in securities, goods and financial services: 65.1%
- Treasury Managers: 67.4%
- Top management: 70.0%
- Retailers: 70.3%
- Human Resources Managers: 71.2%
- Bartenders: 72.4%
- Real estate brokers and salespeople: 73.3%
- Drivers / sellers and truck drivers: 73.7%
You’ll probably spot a few of the trends on this list yourself, but 24/7 Wall St. noted that women tend to be paid less in financial pursuits and professions in which they are a minority. They note:
How well women are represented in the workforce in a given occupation is also a factor contributing to the pay gap. In occupations with the smallest pay gap, the proportion of women employed tends to be higher. On the other hand, in six of the 10 occupations with the largest pay gap in 2014, women made up the minority of the workforce.
The results compare the average weekly earnings of men and women who work at least 35 hours per week all year round. For more information, check out the full 24/7 Wall St.
