Make a Garden Chair From a Simple Plank (and Store It in Seconds)

This chair design is as simple as it gets: multiple cutouts from a single 8×12 board and you have a comfortable seat with a sturdy back that can be laid flat in seconds.

There are several different tutorials on how to create this chair on Instructables, and they all have the same concept. One board goes through the other to create a seating base. No glue, screws or nails required.

Start with a 2x8x12 bar. Use your circular saw to cut a 48 ” board for the backrest and cut out the notches for the seat. You will need a drill and a jigsaw to cut a hole in the back that the plank slot can go through.

You can get creative with the angle of the slot as well as the shape of the boards. Here’s a tutorial for the surf chair (shown above) and the low-rise chair with carved corners in the legs.
