Best Chromecast Apps

Google rocked the home theater market with its Chromecast device. Since it made available to developers, the app market has been flooded with Google Cast support. Here are the most useful Chromecast apps.

Stream videos, music, and photos from your phone: Allcast ( Android , iOS , $ 4.99)

Allcast started out as a way to stream your photos, videos and music from your Android device straight to your Chromecast. Since then, it has gained the ability to stream media from cloud storage like Dropbox. It can also send messages to almost any receiver including Apple TV, Roku, Xbox, many smart TVs, and most DLNA-enabled receivers. Even if you don’t have a Chromecast, this app is useful for streaming media. Allcast is free with streaming length limits and costs $ 5 for unlimited streaming.

Mirroring Your Phone Display: Chromecast (Android, Free)

Back in July, Google added screen mirroring to the Chromecast app. This is the same app you used to set up your Chromecast for the first time. The slide-out navigation menu now has the ability to cast your device’s screen to any available receiver. Streaming requires KitKat or later, but the list of supported devices is growing. If you are already using Lollipop, you can also mirror your display without any applications at all .

Share videos and tabs from your browser: Firefox (Android)

Firefox 34 added the ability to cast individual tabs to your Chromecast. This is especially handy as it allows you to share a tab without forcing you to show everything that appears on your screen. That is, if you receive notifications, change apps, or need to do something else, everyone watching TV can still see the tab, and you can use your phone.

Streaming Network Media: Plex ( Android , iOS )

We love Plex for these parts. Even without Chromecast support, it’s one of the best ways to stream media from your computer to your phone. However, when he added Chromecast support, it also became the easiest way to get it installed on a TV. You can stream directly from your desktop to your TV in just a couple of taps. The iOS app costs $ 5, but you can use the Android version for free.

Play Podcasts: Pocket Casts (Android, $ 3.99)

It was only a matter of time before podcast apps joined the fray and started streaming them to Chromecast. So far, Pocket Casts seem to do their job best. While the app costs $ 4, which might scare off the average podcast listener, the app is pretty solid. However, we’re still waiting for our favorite Android podcast app DoggCatcher to get Chromecast support.

Cloud Music Streaming: Play Music (Android, iOS)

The Google Play Music app is one of the few music services that serves as both a subscription and a music locker. Google lets you upload a huge amount of songs to its cloud storage locker that can be cast to your Chromecast on Android or iOS. Anything in your collection can be streamed to your TV, whether downloaded locally or not.

The basics

Aside from all these nice apps that can do smart things, there are also obvious, basic Chromecast-enabled apps worth checking out. You may have already installed some of them, but you may not know about them until you connect your Chromecast:

You can also check out the Cast Store, which contains a catalog of all the Chromecast-enabled apps that arrive on the Play Store. While we try to show only the best apps here, the Cast Store will keep you informed of everything that comes out for you to try for yourself.
