How to Permanently Archive WhatsApp Conversations
The latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android brings some major changes to the chat archive system in the app. The “new archive,” as the application calls it, does exactly the same as the “old” archive — it stores your archived messages — with one important exception: you can now permanently archive chats that you want to ignore or delete from your inbox.
Previously, archived WhatsApp conversations would return to your list of active chats when a new message was received. While you can permanently disable push notifications for chats you choose to ignore , you will still see the unread message icon in your inbox and you will have to re-archive the conversation to hide it. However, enabling WhatsApp’s new “Archive chats” setting prevents this from happening.
(Remember, you can always block contacts and unknown phone numbers on WhatsApp if someone bothers you or annoys you with unwanted messages .)
The ability to archive WhatsApp chats should be available to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks, but Android users can install WhatsApp 2.21.11.2 beta (or higher) to try it out sooner.
To get started, use this link on the Google Play Store to join the WhatsApp beta program. The update should be installed automatically shortly thereafter, or you can download it manually from the Google Store page.
As soon as the option of permanent archiving of chats becomes available to you, you can enable it in the application settings as follows:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner.
- Go to Settings> Chats.
- Turn on “Archive chats” under the “Archived chats” heading.
- To archive a conversation, press and hold the chat thread on “Inbox” folder, then select “Archive” in the top menu.
- The Archive tab will move to the top of the Inbox screen next to the Chats tab, making it easier to access ignored messages.
