Work on a Specific Skill for One to Three Days to Practice Effectively

We’ve all probably heard of the somewhat dubious 10,000 hour practice rule . If this seems challenging, try breaking down the skills and working on each sub-task for one to three sessions.

As the business blog Enterpreneur notes, the 10,000 hour rule is often misunderstood to mean that anyone can be good at anything if they just do it long enough. This is obviously not true, but practice has its merits. If, of course, you do everything right. But what are you doing at this time? Pick a specific task and learn to do it instinctively. As the various smaller tasks fill out, you begin to become an instinctively proficient person:

Conscious practice is when you are working on a skill that takes 1 to 3 sessions to master. If it takes longer, then you are working on something too difficult.

Once you have mastered this tiny behavior, you can move on to the next small activity, which will take 1 to 3 sessions to complete. Repeat this process for 10,000 hours. This is a deliberate practice.

The entrepreneur uses a simple example: keeping your elbow raised while hitting with a baseball bat. Most jobs and skills have similar tasks. Whether it’s how to play a certain note on an instrument, how to identify certain design elements, or simply perform certain types of math. Dividing complex processes into simpler ones and then working on them over several days is one of the best ways to gradually develop your ability to perform larger, more complex tasks.
