How to Prevent Apple Music CarPlay From Crashing Until a Real Solution Is Found
Over the past few days, we’ve seen loads of posts on Reddit and social media that Apple Music on CarPlay is suddenly crashing. While we are not aware of the specific cause and there is no confirmed fix, there are several workarounds you can try while you wait.
Why is Apple Music crashing on CarPlay?
CarPlay Music seems to be crashing on devices running iOS 14.5.1 that are connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data. (Separate reports also point to app crashes for users in the iOS 14.6 beta.) Other users claim the app crashes on iPhones, iPads, and iPods even if you’re not using CarPlay, but this has not been confirmed. Oddly enough, the first crash reports surfaced on Monday, almost two weeks after the release of iOS 14.5.1.
Is there any way to avoid Apple Music crashing?
Some users have reported that the app works fine in airplane mode or when Bluetooth and mobile data are turned off in the settings app. One Reddit user even checked the crash report to make sure the issue was caused by Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity. This means that the problem is not with the operating system or application, but rather an Apple server problem.
Unfortunately, using Apple Music offline is not a suitable solution for everyone. Apple Music can play downloaded tracks offline, but that doesn’t matter if you don’t have music stored locally on your phone.
While this is inconvenient, you can also try disabling CarPlay and just play music from your iPhone instead. It’s not perfect, but it might be the only way to stream Apple Music in your car for now.
Either way, we have to wait for Apple to fix the problem. If this is indeed an issue on Apple’s part, it will most likely be fixed with a server update. However, it is possible that the fix could come in the form of an iOS patch or app update. Stay tuned for the Reddit and Apple support topics listed above.
