Keep a Single Sentence Journal If You Don’t Have Time to Write
Keeping a journal encourages creativity and helps you think . But writing one or two pages each day can take a long time. If you don’t feel like you have time to keep a regular diary, start a one-sentence diary.
If you are like me, you have huge gaps in your diary entries. I often vow to keep a diary, but then feel obligated to write lengthy reflections in it every day. It starts to feel more like a chore than a good habit.
Here’s a solution inspired by author Gretchen Rubin:
Keep the idea of the diary, but give up the volume, and write a sentence or two each day to jot down your most vivid memories. You might think these short articles aren’t enough to make a difference in your life, but Rubin insists that the idea is both manageable and effective. “One sentence is enough. When I look back at it years later, this one sentence really keeps the memories alive – it really brings back the past – that’s one of the things you really want to do in the diary, ”she says.
One sentence is simple enough. It relieves stress, but still helps you reflect. It may not affect you as much as a long writing session, but it will at least help you stick to the habit. Plus, once you write that one sentence, you can feel inspired to move on.
