Reduce Transportation Costs During Your Next Vacation With a Cheap Used Bike

Airfare and accommodation make up the bulk of the travel budget. But once you get to your destination, shipping costs can go up too. Instead of renting a car or paying for a taxi, consider buying a cheap used bike for getting around town.

This fun tip from thrifty expert Jeff Yeager:

… when I’m flying somewhere where I plan to stay for at least a few days, one of my first stops is at a local thrift store to buy an inexpensive used bike. I can’t even count how much it has saved me money on taxis, car rentals, and even public transport over the years. It’s also a great way to see and get to know the place while trying to practice a little.

Before heading home, Yeager either donates the bike to deduct taxes, or gives it to make someone else’s life.

Of course, with this advice, your mileage will change. For example, you may not find a cheap bike at a thrift store. And of course, if you do that, you will also sacrifice driving comfort. Not every city is completely bike-friendly, so this tip will work better in some places than others.

There are some obvious considerations, but this is a fun and economical option for your next vacation.
